What would happen if the plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down?
The cell membrane is a mechanical barrier for the protoplasm and regulates the movement of substances in and out of the cell via diffusion and osmosis. If the plasma membrane ruptures that leaves a chance for the unregulated movement of substances into the cell and a huge danger of protoplasm leaking out which would lead to cell death.
