What is osmosis?
Explanation Explanation of the concept: Osmosis is the process that involves the movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a low concentration through a semipermeable membrane, until the concentrations become equal on either side of the membrane.. It is a passive process. There are 3 diffenent types of solutions exhibiting osmosis- Hypotonic solution: The solute concentration is higher inside the cell than outside environment. Hypertonic solution: The solute concentration is lower inside the cell than outside environment. Isotonic solution: The solute concentration is same at both inside and outside of the cell. Osmosis is of 2 types: Endosmosis: The movement of solvent molecules inside the cell, when it is placed in hypotonic solution is known as endosmosis. Exosmosis: The movement of solvent molecules outside the cell, when it is placed in hypertonic solution is known as exosmosis.
