Explanation Cork cells are non-functional cells that are arranged compactly without any gaps or spaces. This arrangement of the cells provides strength to the plant cell and also protects it from any kind of mechanical injury and infections. Cork cells have suberin (a waxy layer present in the cell wall) that avoid the loss of water from the cells. Final answer Cork cells protect the plant body from external and mechanical injuries, infection and also prevent desiccation.
