Explanation When a carpet is beaten with a stick, the carpet is brought into motion suddenly, while the dust particles that are trapped in the pores or on the surface of the carpet tend to stay in rest as the inertia of an object tends to resist any change in its state of rest or of motion. According to Newton’s first law of motion, as the carpet is beaten with a stick the dust particles stay in a state of rest, while the carpet moves from its initial position. Hence, the dust particles come out of the carpet. Final answer Therefore, it is the inertia of rest that makes the dust come out of the carpet when it is beaten.
