Explanation As we understand the concept of inertia we apply same concept to understand why luggage should be tie when kept on a roof of a bus. When luggage is initially at rest suddenly when bus starts moving forward, at that instant luggage opposes the motion due to the property of inertia. Because of this, luggage experience the force in backward direction. When moving bus suddenly apply brakes, bus experience a force in backward direction, at the same time luggage opposes the change in state due to the property of inertia. So, it tries to continue in motion in forward direction. Force experience by luggage is depending on the mass of luggage. Higher the mass means higher the force experience by the luggage and more the chances to fall off. Tying up the luggage, prevent the luggage to fall off. Final answer As we can see that, The inertia is the property of Force and it is proved by Newton’s second law that the change of acceleration is directly proportional to Force. So If a vehicle moves forwarded so luggage will feel an opposite force and it may fall, to stick properly with rrof it should be tied with rope.
