Why Colonial (British) Government gave special emphasis on mapping?
Right from its early years, the colonial government gave special emphasis on mapping, because of the following reasons: The government believed that good maps are very much necessary to understand the landscape and know about topography. When towns began to grow, maps were prepared to make plans of development of these towns. Maps were also prepared to develop commerce and consolidate power. Maps of towns give information about the location of rivers, hills and vegetation. This information is very much important for planning structures for defence purposes
