How did the urban and rural elements merge in the colonial city of Madras?
Madras was an important commercial town during the colonial rule. Most of the Europeans lived in this city as the administration and judicial systems were favourable to them. They settled near Fort St. George. But the Black Town developed outside the fort. It was laid out in straight lines. In this town, the weavers, artisans, middlemen and interpreters lived. Thus, Madras had a semi-rural air about it. The development of Madras was made to fulfil the needs and provide essential comforts to the white people living there.
