The Language Committee of the Constituent Assembly had suggested the following: Hindi in the Devanagri script would be the official language in India. The transition to Hindi would be gradual. For the first fifteen years, English would remain in use for all official purposes. Each province will be allowed to opt for one regional language for official work in the province.
