Observe that for a right triangle, the hypotenuse is always greater than either other side. Thus opp/hyp and adj/hyp must be less than 1 for an acute angle.

means the output of the sine or cosine function is always less than 1. Keep in mind that the opposite side for one acute angle is the adjacent side of the other acute angle.
