Under the "Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act," the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education was founded in 1965 as a statutory and independent body (amended in 1976). Six million HSC and SSC students are expected to take the supplementary exam, which is offered to an extra 14 million HSC students and 17 million SSC students twice a year. The total number of SSC schools and HSC (Higher Secondary Schools/Junior Colleges) schools in the state is about 21000 and 7000, respectively.
