Regarding the Program

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science & Technology (Government of India), is offering academic researchers between the ages of 40 and 50 the SERB Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB-STAR) 2022–23 opportunity. The fellowship aims to honor and reward Principal Investigators (PIs) of SERB programs for their exceptional work.

For three years, the chosen scholars will receive a fellowship of INR 15,000 per month, a research grant of INR 10 lakh annually, and INR 1 lakh annually as overhead costs.

Eligibility for SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023 

To qualify, a candidate must: 

• Be between the ages of 40 and 50 as of December 31 of the year in which the application is submitted.
• Possess an "Excellent" completion score on three prior financial years' worth of individual-centric SERB initiatives (Note - Only the PI of the projects are eligible.)
• Hold a regular* academic or research position in a national laboratory, a recognized academic institution, or any other recognized R&D institution

The term "Regular" refers to the following:

• The individuals that are chosen by the institutions should compete for the "sanctioned" position. Once the probationary period is over, these posts are regularised or confirmed.
• After the term is up, the applicants who were assigned to a tenure-track position will likely be renewed.

Benefits of SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023 

The following prizes will be given to the chosen nominees:

• A monthly fellowship of INR 15,000
• A yearly research grant of INR 10 lakh
• For three years, there will be overhead costs of INR 1 lakh every year.

Note: There will be up to 30 awards presented annually, but never more than 90. Once a year, the awards will be given out.

• A list of publications that are the product of the finished project (if any)
• Copies of published works (if applicable)
• Specifications of the project's completed patents (if any)
• Patent applications (if applicable)
• Documents relating to the transfer of technology (if any)
• Complete list of publications, patents, and any other notable contributions
• Endorsement certificate from PI certificate
• Technical Report

How can one apply for SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023?

• Step 3: After completing the registration process, complete the mandatory fields in the Profile Detail section of the User Profile, upload the appropriate files, and submit the online application.

Note - The PI should email the STAR nomination form to the Nominator after filling out the details.

• The STAR Nomination form will be filled out and sent to the SERB online portal along with an email notification to the nominator.
• The nomination must be submitted to SERB by the nominator.
• After submitting, PI and Nominator will be notified if the submission was successful.

Significant Dates regarding SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023 

• 15 June 2022, is the start date for applications.
• 28 July 2022 is the deadline for applications.

Selection Standards for SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023 

• To narrow down the nominees, the SERB will first review and confirm the qualifying requirements. The selection of winners will only take into account valid nominations.
• A competent committee will choose the nominees based on the results of completed projects and other research work, which is given the most weight.

Terms and Conditions of SERB- Science and Technology Award for Research (SERB STAR) 2022-2023 

• The project output will only include publications in which the SERB award is recognized.
• The prize cannot be requested by the PI directly.

  The nominee for the award will be nominated by the institution's head.
• The projects that have been finished in the last three fiscal years will be taken into consideration.
• This scholarship is not available to principal investigators who are currently recipients of the JC Bose Fellowship, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, etc.
• Candidates who have applied for SERB STAR but are not selected may reapply for consideration the following year, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements.
• The concerned Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) evaluates the Project Completion Report (PCR) of the completed project, and the performance is graded based on the caliber of research work completed in the project, its impact, publications, patents, and research personnel generated, among other factors.
