About the Membership of Sweden and Finland:
- The decision in Washington followed a vote earlier in the French National Assembly, where 209 lawmakers voted in favour of Sweden and Finland's accession and 46 against it.
- The Senate, the second chamber of the French parliament, has previously accepted the accession.
- Sweden and Finland applied to join the Western Defense Alliance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Although not NATO members, the two countries have historically been close allies.
- The accession procedures must be ratified by all 30 NATO nations, of which two-thirds have already approved the new members before they can take effect.
