Important Question from chapter 11 : Rebels and the Raj

Q-What did the rebels want? To what extent did the vision of different social group differ?

A- The insurgents intended to overthrow British control. It was to be replaced by Indian rule, but the rebels were unsure about the nature of that government. They were not fighting for the establishment of a democratic government. The following were the main points of the rebels' vision:

  1. Hindu-Muslim Unity: The insurgents' understanding of Hindu-Muslim Unity was hazy. They did, however, hold the principles of Hindu-Muslim cooperation in high regard. Cow slanghter was outlawed whenever a new territory fell to rebels because both parties' religious sensibilities were honoured.

2. Preserving Indian Culture: Many people thought the corporation was indoctrinating the Indians with European culture and Christianity. The insurgents intended to reverse this trend. Some of the company's efforts to reform our society were viewed in the same light.

The perspectives of various social groups:

Zamindars: Many of them objected to the company's promise of an auction of their estate to recoup losses. They saw themselves as monarchs who couldn't be deprived of their property. As a result, many of them want government that matched their needs.

Merchants: They were an eclectic bunch. They favoured the rule of law because it ensured peace and order across broad swaths of India. However, they viewed company control as partisan, favouring British economic interests at the expense of Indians, because the elimination of company rule could result in a more favourable environment.

Artisans: Most artisans were struggling to make ends meet as a result of the Company's policy, which pushed manufactured goods from England.
