Dietrich Brandis developed new legislation for forests and established training institutions. He founded the Imperial Forest School at Dehradun in 1878 which was reestablished in 1906 as The Imperial Research Institute. He also worked for the forest flora of northwest and central India. Even after retiring from the post, he continued to work for the welfare of forests. He became the principal of the forester training institute at Balaghat in M.P. He served Indian forestry for 20 years and in 1887 he became a knight Commander. In 1858 he introduced the “taungya” system under which villagers provided labor for plantations. The name of the forest Institute of Dehradun which was set up by Brandis in 1906 is the Imperial Forest Research Institute.
