The  Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national level entrance test organized by National Law Universities (NLUs) to provide admissions to law aspirants to 3 years and 5 years integrated LLB and LLM programs. The official notification of  CLAT 2021 will be released on the official website of CLAT in the 3rd week of December 2020. Law aspirants who wish to for the CLAT 2021 exam will be able to apply online from 1st week of January 2021. There are 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) that participate in CLAT examination, along with other private universities that accept admissions based on CLAT 2021 score.

Candidates can refer to the below table for the reference of important dates. These dates are for reference and tentative in nature and subject to change so the candidates can keep checking this page for confirmed dates.

CLAT 2021 Eligibility Criteria

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) Exam Core Committee defines the eligibility criteria for LLB and LLM program. The eligibility criteria for both the programs are given below.

For LLB Program

Age Limit	There is no upper age limit for CLAT 2021 as per revised rules
Academic Qualification	Candidate must have passed 10+2 or any equivalent examination with at least 45% marks and 40% in case of SC/ ST students.
Appearing Candidates	Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination in April/ May 2020 are also eligible to appear in CLAT 2021.

For LLM Program

Age Limit	There is no upper age limit for CLAT 2021 as per revised rules
Academic Qualification	Candidate must have an LLB or any other equivalent degree with at least 55% marks, 40% in case of SC/ ST students.
Appearing Candidates	Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination in April/ May 2020 are also eligible to appear in CLAT 2021.

CLAT 2021 Registration

CLAT 2021 Application Form

The registration window of CLAT shall be functional from January 2021. The candidate can keep a tab on the official website of CLAT to fill the application form whenever it is released. The candidates need to register themselves before filling the form. The registration process has 4 steps. They are:

Step 1: CLAT Registration

Candidates need to create their login ID so that they can always access their profile for CLAT and that can be done through registration. The candidates need to provide the correct details during registration especially the phone number and email address as it cannot be changed later. All the communication or notification important for the candidate will be sent to the registered mobile number or email address.

Step 2: Uploading Photo & Signature

Once the candidate has created their user ID they can upload the documents as asked. Candidates must keep the specification in mind while uploading the documents. If the candidate doesn’t follow the given specifications they will not be able to upload the document. In the below table the details of the document are given.

Step 3: CLAT Application Form

Once the candidate has uploaded the photo and the signature he/she can fill the further required details of the application form. The form requires the following details.

• Personal Details- Full Name, Date of Birth (DOB), Gender, mobile number, category, Parent’s name, Residential Address etc.

• Qualification Details-  Year of Graduating,  Marks scored, Name of the Board etc. 

• Preference for NLU as per your choice.

Step 4: Pay the CLAT Application Fee

When the candidates have successfully filled the application form he/she is required to pay the application fee.

• Candidates can pay the fee both in online and offline mode.  

• Online Mode- Debit/Credit Card, Net Banking, Bhim Or Paytm.

•  Offline Mode- Bank Challan

CLAT 2021 Admit Card

CLAT Admit Card will be released in the third week of April 2021 on the official website. 
It is mandatory for the candidates to carry a  valid photo ID proof (Aadhar Card/Voter ID/ Passport/Driving license) along with CLAT Exam Admit Card in examination centre. If any candidates fail to do so he/she will not be permitted to give the exam. The candidates can download the admit from the official website i.e. clat.ac.in

CLAT 2021 Syllabus

The consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) releases the official CLAT Syllabus, and there are no changes in the curriculum. If the consortium of NLUs decides to make any changes in the syllabus it will be notified on the official website. Candidates who wish to apply for UG program can refer to CLAT Syllabus from the official website which comprises of:

Section 1: English including Comprehension

This section will include passages of about 450-500 words each. These passages will be from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing and would be of a standard that a 12th standard student may be able to read in about 5-7 minutes. 

Each passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require the candidates  to demonstrate his/her comprehension and language skills, including the  abilities to:

• Read and comprehend the main point discussed in the passage, as well as any arguments and viewpoints discussed or set out in the passage;

• Draw inferences and conclusions based on the passage;

• Summarise the passage;

• Compare and contrast the different arguments or viewpoints set out in the passage; and

• Understand the meaning of various words and phrases used in the passage. In the grammar section, candidates are required to spot the errors, fill in the blanks with an appropriate choice, basic grammar etc. 

Section 2: General Knowledge and Current Affairs

Current Affairs Including General Knowledge

This section will include passages of up to 450 words each. The passages shall be from news, journalistic sources and other non-fiction writings. The questions may include an examination of legal information or knowledge discussed in or related to the passage, but would not require any additional knowledge of the law beyond the passage. Each passage will be followed by a series of questions that will require the candidates to demonstrate his/her awareness of various aspects of current affairs and general knowledge, including:

• Contemporary events of significance from India and the world;

• Arts and culture;

• International affairs; and

• Historical events of continuing significance.

Section 3 Legal Reasoning

This section will also include passages of around 450 words each. The passages may relate to fact situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions or moral philosophical enquiries. The candidates will not require any prior knowledge of the law. Candidates will benefit from a general awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues to better apply general principles or propositions to the given fact scenarios.

Each passage would be followed by a series of questions that will require the candidate to:

• Identify and infer the rules and principles set out in the passage;

• Apply such rules and principles to various fact situations; and

• Understand how changes to the rules or principles may alter their application to various fact situations.

Section 4 Logical Reasoning

This section of UG CLAT will include passages about 300 words each. Each passage will be followed by one or more questions that will require the candidate to:

• Recognize an argument, its premises and conclusions;

• Read and identify the arguments set out in the passage;

• Critically analyse patterns of reasoning, and assess how conclusions may depend on particular premises or evidence;

• Infer what follows from the passage and apply these inferences to new situations;

• Draw relationships and analogies, identify contradictions and equivalence and assess the effectiveness of arguments.

Section 5 Quantitative Techniques

The Quantitative Techniques section of the UG-CLAT will include short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial or diagrammatic representations of numerical information, followed by a series of questions. The candidates will be required to derive information from such passages, graphs, or other representations, and apply mathematical operations on such information.

The questions will require the candidate to:

• Derive, infer, and manipulate numerical information set out in such passages, graphs, or other representations; and

• Apply various 10th standard mathematical operations on such information, including from areas such as ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation.
