Digital twins are virtual representations of physical objects. They are used for modelling and design purposes.

While the concept might sound like something out of a science fiction novel, the truth is that digital twins are widely used and becoming more common every year.Human beings organise physical assets, close in distance, to handle design and manufacturing tasks. However, due to limited personal capabilities and geographical constraints, high efficiency could not be achieved, especially in product development. The rapid development of new technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Big data analysis, augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence and cloud computing is changing all this. Collectively called Industry 4.0, it has ushered exciting changes in the way things are manufactured.A digital twin is a focused application of the cyber-physical system and provides more practical values and implementation details, and therefore provides a pragmatic way for seamless integration and fusion. Before we discuss the merits and demerits of digital twins in the context of IIoT, let us first understand what exactly the term means. The global digital twin market size was valued at USD 8.60 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow from USD 11.51 billion in 2023 to USD 137.67 billion by 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of 42.6% during the forecast period.

About Digital Twin Technology:- Digital twins are created using the same CAD and modelling software that designers and engineers use in the early stages of product development. The difference with a digital twin is that the model is retained and updated for later stages of the product's lifecycle, such as inspection and maintenance, and often managed in product lifecycle management (PLM) software. The physical connections between the entity and its twin are most often IoT sensors, and a mature IoT implementation is often a prerequisite for digital twins. It's also been said that IoT equally needs digital twins because they bring structure, analytics and usability to IoT data that is otherwise disorganised and hard to interpret.A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical object, process, service or environment that behaves and looks like its counterpart in the real-world. A digital twin can be a digital replica of an object in the physical world, such as a jet engine or wind farms, or

even larger items such as buildings or even whole cities, alternatively digital twin technology can be used to replicate processes or runs simulations in order to collect data to predict how they will perform.A digital twins virtual replica of a physical product, process or a system. It is a digital representation or a digital instantiation that includes the virtual model of the physical object, data from the object, a unique one-to-one correspondence to the object and the ability to monitor the object. This pairing of the virtual and physical worlds allows analysis of data and monitoring of systems to mitigate problems before they even occur, prevent downtime, develop new opportunities, and even plan by using simulations. Simply put, a digital twin is a virtual representation of what has been manufactured in the real world. A digital twin thus acts as a bridge between physical and digital worlds. It does so by using sensors to collect real-time data about a physical item. One of the first users of digital twins was NASA, which has been using this concept successfully to emulate space flights on the ground.

Examples Of Digital Twin Technology:- Digital twin technology is expected to grow exponentially in the near future largely due to the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Extended Reality, and Cloud computing . It has already been adopted in many industries, which employ it in everything from product development and design to manufacturing and maintenance, health sector and more.

Types Of Digital Twin Technology:- We can use digital twin to represent everything from individual to entire system; their purpose & scope greatly vary from one to another. Generally four types of digital twin are used in the entire system.

Component Twin:- Component twins are digital versions of an individual part of a system or product, such as a gear or screw. Rather than simply modeling all the individual parts of a product, though, component twins are typically used to model integral parts, such as those under particular stress or heat. By digitally modelling these parts and subjecting them to dynamic simulations, designers and engineers can see how the parts can be improved to ensure their integrity in likely scenarios.

Asset Twin:- Asset twins, also called product twins, are digital versions of a physical product rather than its individual parts. While asset twins can technically be composed of numerous component twins, their purpose is to understand how their various parts operate together within a single real-world product. For example, a wind turbine might have an associated asset twin used to monitor its performance and identify possible parts failure due to common wear and tear.

System Twin:- System twins, also called unit twins, are virtual representations of systems of products working together. While asset twins model real-world products composed of many parts, system twins model these individual products as components of a larger system. Understanding how assets interact with one another offers the opportunity to improve how they relate to one another, increasing productivity and efficiency as a result.

Process Twin:- Process twins are digital representations of systems working together. For example, while a system twin might model a manufacturing line, a process twin could model the entire factory all the way down to the employees operating the machines on the factory floor.

Advantage Of Digital Twin Technology:- Digital twin helps to determine the optimal set of parameters and actions that can help maximize some of the key performance metrics and improve forecasting accuracy using different modelling techniques and algorithms, the digital twin model can be used to predict the future state of the machines. For example, a digital twin can predict when race car tyres will wear out on the track and suggest immediate replacement. As can be seen, digital twins determine the best course of action by eliminating the guesswork to service the critical assets in the manufacturing units. The increasing adoption of IoT is ideal for enterprises to leverage digital twin platforms to boost their services and platforms.Companies aren’t using digital twins as a solution for just one problem, they’re implementing the concept to achieve a variety of improvements. For those of you still looking to understand what benefits digital twin could bring to your organisations, you’ve come to the right place. This post will outline the primary advantages of digital twins – and get you thinking how the concept could make  difference in your organisation
