What is the full meaning of MAC?

The Media Access Control Address is the complete form of MAC. The hardware id number is also known as the MAC address. Each computer's NIC (network interface card), whether a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet card, has an unaltered MAC address that was placed by the manufacturer during production. Nortel, Dell, Nortel, and Cisco are a few well-known NIC manufacturing businesses. By swapping out the NIC cards, the system's default address may be changed.

MAC's brief history

 

• In terms of history, humans can presume that MAC addresses were discovered by Xerox PARC researchers.
• In the place of MAC address, numerous similar notions are employed, such as physical address, hardware address, and ethernet hardware address of a network device.
• Even BIA (burned-in address, notably for Cisco Router Switches) is frequently used to refer to the same thing.

MAC Advantages

• The network interface card (NIC) is a computer circuit card that allows users to connect to a network on their computer. It converts the data into an electrical signal that may be delivered via the internet.
• In a system, there is a hardware address as well as an IP address.
• TCP / IP addresses are linked to IP addresses, whereas network adapter hardware is linked to MAC addresses.
• The first six digits of the MAC address are used to provide manufacturer info; this is known as OUI (Organizational Unique Identifier).
• The last six digits of a Network Interface control system are assigned by the manufacturing firm.
• A network manager discovers consistency in identifying information sent and received on the network using the MAC address.
• The only reason for this is because, unlike dynamic IP addresses, MAC addresses do not change over time.

MAC's Restrictions

• Because the first three bytes (OUI) of a MAC address are reserved for the producer, the same producer is limited to just 2 24 unique addresses per OUI.
• We may say that MAC address sorting is simple to fake. Because Ethernet is broadcast, one can operate in disguise and only listen to and from recognised MAC addresses.
• In most cases, an attacker can get network access by repeatedly changing his MAC address to one that is acceptable.
