What is the definition of direction?

The information included in the relative position of one point with respect to another point, but not the distance information, is referred to as direction. Directions might be relative to a reference point or absolute in relation to a previously agreed-upon frame of reference.

Types of direction

The four cardinal directions or cardinal points are:

  1. North
  2. East
  3. South
  4. West

                          Cardinal directions

        1                      North – West
        2 North – East
        3 South – West
        4 South – East

                           Intermediate directions

North-North-West                  West-North-West
North-North- East East -North-East
South-South-West West-South-West
South-South-East East-South-East

The four primary directions are East, West, North, and South, as we all know. The four cardinal directions – South East, South West, North East, and North West – are also well known to us. To answer our direction reasoning issue, we will need all eight directions.
We presume that the direction in front of us is North, and that the direction behind us is South. West is to our left, while East is to our right. The sun also rises in the east and sets in the west, as we all know. When a person faces the sun, East is in front of him/her and West is behind him/her. North will be on his left, while South will be to his right.
