Several new browser competitors have entered the market, offering improved user interfaces, faster internet speeds, and smoother performance. It appears that Internet Explorer was unable to compete and has gradually devolved into "simply a default explorer used to install alternative browsers."

"The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 resides in Microsoft Edge," according to Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager. "Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, safer, and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer," he said, "but it also solves a critical concern: compatibility with older, legacy websites and applications."

Microsoft stopped developing new features for the browser in 2016, and this may be the first time the company has decided to phase out the browser. Netizens began reacting to the news on social media shortly after it was announced.

In three days, Internet Explorer will be retired. I haven't used Internet Explorer in decades, but it was my primary browser throughout my upbringing. It'll be the end of an era, whether you liked or hated Internet Explorer," a social media user wrote. Many people also published memes with their social network handles stating 'Goodbye Internet Explorer.'
