Assessing development

You're introducing a brand-new company and product. You believe it will alter the world, or at the very least, the world of your target market. Why aren't you producing amazing content marketing campaigns? Wait, what? Due to the fact that you've just launched a new company and website, your domain authority is 0.

Anyone would be turned off by it. But I'm here to encourage you to persevere.

Why? Because I persisted (on multiple occasions) and turned blogs with no traffic into ones that receive millions of visitors each quarter.

I'm not even that smart, you know.

Before continuing, let's first cover the fundamentals. Trying to solve a situation you don't understand will just make your life more difficult.

What is Domain authority?

Your search engine ranking is determined by your domain authority. Contrary to popular belief, which holds that domain authority is a Google phrase, it was actually created by the SEO software business Moz.

A number called domain authority indicates how effective your website is with search engines. It is calculated using a number of variables that Moz has determined to be crucial to search engines.

The number of total links and linking root domains is examples of published criteria.

How can I find out my domain authority rating?

Use a domain authority lookup tool to determine domain authority.

It makes sense to verify your domain authority score on Moz. Their free domain authority lookup tool is available here.

Click Analyze Domain after entering your domain's URL in the search box. The results will then be displayed along with your score, linking root domain count, amount of keywords your site ranks for, and spam score.

Below that, there are two lists. "Top Pages by Links" and "Top Linking Domains" are two examples of these.

The first displays the pages with the highest link ratings. The page authority is this. The second displays a list of the websites with the highest authority that connects to your website.

What constitutes a reliable domain authority?

There is a range of 0 to 100 for domain authority. If you have insufficient data, Moz won't rank you, but other tools that measure domain authority will give you a 0.

It's simple to lose heart when you're in this position. But don't! For this reason, I've included nine useful tips for you below.

A domain authority score of 40–50 is considered "average" by marketers. Between the ages of 50 and 60, one qualifies as "good." You are fantastic if you are above 60.

This is true if you're attempting to rank for each and every word.

Actually, in order to rank for the keywords you're wanting to rank for, you need to have a better domain authority score than the competition.

For instance, the Mio blog focuses on Slack and Microsoft Teams-related search phrases. 36 is the domain authority score. Does this imply that it operates below par? Quite the opposite.

Below, you can see that in the previous three months, 589,000 clicks were created. And a page on the Mio blog appeared as a result of around ten million searches.

How important is domain authority?

Yes. Websites with higher scores typically rank higher than those with lower scores.

Sure, Google takes into account a tonne of other things. And you must not overlook any of these. However, there are situations when a website with a greater domain authority outranks you despite the fact that you've done everything in your ability to write (and market) a better post than your rival.

A posting we made at Mio on shared Slack channels serves as one illustration. In third place on Google behind Slack and Zapier was the original post. Therefore, we set out to dissect the Zapier post and improve each component of our own post. The outcome? Still in third place. More than 100% more people use Zapier than Mio. However, we are working on it.

I inquired about the importance of domain authority with Hiba Amin, a fellow content marketer and Content Marketing Manager at Soapbox:

To raise our DA, we have been aggressively working to build backlinks. We increased from 44 to 67 in Ahrefs. I believe that the links with the highest authority have given the biggest increases.

Utilizes Google domain authority?

No. Strange, huh? Domain authority is not a statistic that Google uses, according to Moz.

It's crucial to keep in mind that domain authority was once used to forecast how well a website would do on search engine result pages.

How to boost your domain's authority

The nine tasks are laid out for you in the next section. To increase the Mio blog's monthly views from 100 to 500,000, I consistently followed this strategy.

Without a doubt, it will be laborious. The downside is that you'll need to upgrade your WordPress plan because you'll receive so much traffic!

Despite the temptation to regularly check domain authority, don't anticipate fast benefits. A long game, SEO.

Begin by creating material

Yes, I am aware. Everybody agrees. But it's the truth. If you don't start expanding your website, your domain authority score won't go up.

Additionally, content does not imply producing anything purely for artistic purposes. It also doesn't entail misrepresenting other people's work as your own. Start producing content that people want if you want to increase your domain authority and rank higher on Google (or even indexed at all). what individuals are looking for.

Here is a sample of some comments I recently sent to a prospect. It is a thorough analysis of their current material.

There were some clear things keeping you from completing the post, as you could see. For me, word count is the most obvious.

Google won't index content with fewer than 300 words.
Less than 1000 will not show on the first page.
If someone else is writing about it, anything with fewer than 2000 words won't be competitive.
While the content that is already there is good, a cursory scan revealed the following elements are missing:
  • Embrace pictures
  • include video
  • include podcasts

With no CTA, why bother starting a blog in the first place?

The most popular blog posts educate readers and offer useful advice. The most popular blog entries have more than 2000 words as well as photographs, videos, and podcasts. The blog entries with the highest conversion rates have at least one call to action.

The blogs on your website appear to have been written, yet creating a blog post involves putting it together.

When beginning over, it's important to:
  • conduct a keyword search
  • Prepare your writing, recording, or creation in advance.
  • Invite opinions from those who will spread your content and lend it more authority.

Develop backlinks to your material

Once you've produced some stuff that deserves to be shared, do so!

Search engines favour reading-friendly content. They scan through it, read it from beginning to end, engage with it, and then click through to another page.

So don't hold off until someone searches for it on Google. Look for venues where you may distribute your content. It's simpler to say than to do. And frequently where firms fail.

Thus, here is what you ought to do:

Focus on releasing on as many other channels as you can by downloading my content promotion checklist.

If your material is worth sharing, as you distribute it through various means, people will begin to link to it.

You might refer to this as organic link-building. or unforced connection building

Getting in touch with people and asking them to link to it is a more proactive strategy. Although it initially looks difficult, this is now accepted practice.

In the piece above, Andy touches on who to contact. I generally always get in touch with:

contributions to quotes
People Publications whose research I used are referenced
Authors who have previously written on a related subject
Those who will benefit from this article

Repurpose your successful content

You've already produced some stuff at this point. Probably a blog entry.

Out of the more than 1.7 billion websites in use today, Growth Badger estimates that there are more than 600 million blogs. More than 31 million active bloggers in the US publish at least once a month.

**Did you catch that? I linked to the article by Growth Badger and cited it. One of your objectives while producing material is this.

It's time to reuse your material if it is a blog post that has gained some traction. Take the title, the highlights, or the phrases and create something new.

The additional item can be:
  • an episode of the same podcast
  • In a YouTube video, the highlights are described.
  • a guest article that expands on a certain section of the blog
  • Several samples from social media
  • a thread on Twitter
To promote whatever it is you repurpose, use the same procedure. While increasing domain authority is the aim, Google won't be enough to achieve this.

Do your SEO research.

The first step in SEO preparation is studying it. It's difficult to "simply do SEO," and it's not a good idea to outsource your content or your business to a company that doesn't understand it.

Here are some pointers for individuals who are new to SEO:
  • Install the Yoast plugin if you're using WordPress, and wait to publish your content until each part is green. Many websites utilise this plugin, but I've also seen them neglect it. Avoid doing that.
  • If you sign up for Neil Patel's email list, you'll receive a new exercise or SEO-related resource every week. You'll see an increase in traffic over time and begin to develop your own testing as a result.
  • Brands that share and backlink to other people's material on social media should be highlighted. Before you make the effort to include them, it's crucial to perform some research and make sure they do share material.
  • Make a plan for internal sharing. Your material will be seen and interacted with by more people the more people share it inside your organisation.
In this piece, I elaborate on the SEO foundational material that I covered while serving as the director of content marketing for a firm with a low domain authority score.

Look at the most popular websites

Find out which websites are popular for the keywords you want to rank for. You are in competition for website traffic even if the websites don't compete with you on price.

If this website is performing better than you are for your selected term, consider rephrasing the keyword into a lengthier phrase.

I frequently write about Microsoft Teams, for instance. But guess who appears first in search results for "Microsoft Teams"? You nailed it. Microsoft.

Target words in this example that are connected to Microsoft Teams. rather than attempting to dominate the single phrase. You might leverage Microsoft Teams' competitors or adoption strategy.

You are aware that people are looking for these things since you have seen that they are trending on the websites of your rivals. Create content that supports the existing headline content.

Boost your efforts by using Google Trends

Use Google Trends to ensure that these search terms are currently being searched for if you're concerned to create content that is too similar to that of your competitors.

Confirming that people are actively looking for your material is the only way to be sure they want to read it.

Enter your search criteria at https://trends.google.com/trends/. Set the limits to last 7 days, 14 days, etc. and choose a subject that will draw readers right away.

While you should get some immediate traffic with this strategy, consider making your content evergreen. When producing content, ponder the following questions:

With the help of these website reports, you can find out where your website is losing SEO points and, typically, how to resolve them. Google is your best buddy when it comes to some more technical issues. How To Fix XYZ SEO Issue guidelines have been created by every SEO service. Prior to hiring someone, use these as much as you can (unless you have the budget, of course!)

Always strive to improve

Yes, I did make the well-known phrase from Glengarry Glen Ross applicable to raising your domain authority score.

You should always be optimising your content, regardless of whether your post was successful or not (and success isn't just measured in traffic but also in conversions).

You may optimise your content marketing in a variety of ways. Here are several that you can begin right away:

Add fresh sources, data, and information to your content.
Add fresh (related) keywords you think will help with traffic growth.
To get more clicks, test different blog titles.

You can use my straightforward blog title optimiser worksheet to improve your blog titles.

(It is a free Google Sheet that you may create your own copy of and use repeatedly.) Over the course of two weeks, test your new title to see how much more or less traffic you receive. If it gets stronger, keep doing it. If it falls, try the next title test until you find the one that works best.

Do not purchase backlinks

Only backlinks that have been purchased should be avoided.

There are numerous firms that can give you backlinks on websites with high domain authority quickly. Looks good, doesn't it?

Yes, if you want to appear in search results for phrases related to that website. However, this is not generally the case.

Consider what I wrote about Microsoft Teams as an example. Where can I locate a backlink service that ranks highly for keyphrases related to Microsoft Teams? Undoubtedly a challenging question.

It's also disapproved of by almost everyone. Although there is no proof that Google penalises bought backlinks, the SEO industry generally agrees that this is a no-no.

On websites with high authority, you can pay for content development. A good way to increase domain authority is by guest posting, which is sometimes best outsourced.

What exactly is a guest post?

To establish connections, authority, and links, you can contribute a post as a guest to another person's website.

Typical behaviour is:
  • Your content is created.
  • To an appropriate website, submit it
  • You receive credit for backlinks pointing to your website, blog, research, profile, or business.

Assessing development

After making these adjustments, you should examine Google Analytics website traffic to see if your efforts are having an effect. Additionally, you can uncover the search terms that sent visitors to your site by looking at website traffic on Google Search Console.

Link Google Analytics and Google Search Console together to streamline your life and enable you to view search queries without ever leaving Google Analytics.

All that is required is:
  • Navigate to your Google Analytics account.
  • Visit Acquisition in the left sidebar. Search Engine
  • Select "Set up Search Console data sharing" from the menu.
  • Select a Search Console account.

What does a blog need in terms of domain authority?

Since the scale is logarithmic, it will be much simpler for you to raise your score if your domain authority is at a 20 or 30 than if it is at a 70 or 80. Between 40 and 50 domain authority is regarded as acceptable, between 50 and 60 as good, and over 60 as great.

When does domain authority become effective?

This procedure could take up to six months to finish, according to Google. This procedure will move much more quickly for smaller websites with fewer referring domains to disavow, and noticeable changes in organic rankings will occur within a few weeks.

Can I access Medium using my own domain?

When you link your custom domain, your profile page or publication's medium.com URL will be replaced with the URL for your own custom domain. You may find instructions on creating a custom domain for your Medium profile or publication in this guide.
