A team of Indian researchers discovered an egg-in-egg or anomalous Titanosaurid dinosaur egg in the Bagh area of Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district, marking a historic first.

The discovery was published in the most recent issue of Scientific Reports, a magazine published by a nature organization. The study's title is 'First ovum-in-ovo diseased titanosaurid egg sheds light on sauropod dinosaur reproductive biology.'

The researchers recently discovered a huge number of titanosaurid sauropod nests in Bagh town's Padlya village.
The researchers uncovered an unusual dinosaur egg while analyzing these nests. If you are preparing for competitive exams and looking for expert guidance, you can download our General Knowledge Free Ebook Download Now.

In 5 Points, Learn About Abnormal Fossil Eggs

Near Padlya hamlet, the study team uncovered a sauropod dinosaur nest with ten eggs, one of which was odd.

The aberrant egg features two continuous and circular eggshell layers separated by a large gap, similar to the pathology of ovum-in-ovo (one egg inside another egg) in birds.

The diseased egg's microstructure, as well as that of a nearby egg in the same nest, matches that of titanosaurid sauropod dinosaurs.

This is India's first anomalous egg-in-egg fossil egg discovery. In India, no aberrant egg-in-egg fossil egg of dinosaurs or other reptiles such as lizards, turtles, or crocodiles has ever been discovered.

Dr Harsha Dhiman (Department of Geology, Delhi University) discovered the diseased egg during his PhD fieldwork in the area. Vishal Verma (Higher Secondary School, Bikaner, Dhar District) and corresponding author Prof. Guntupalli V. R. Prasad were also members of the team, in addition to Dhiman (Department of Geology, Delhi University).

Why is the discovery of a fossil egg significant?

The discovery of an ovum-in-ovo diseased egg in titanosaurids supports the idea of a segmented oviduct like in crocodiles and birds, as well as possibly sequential egg laying like in birds.

"The discovery of an ovum-in-ovo egg from a Titanosaurid nest brings up the potential that sauropod dinosaurs possessed an oviduct morphology comparable to that of crocodiles or birds, and they may have adapted to a style of the egg-laying characteristic of birds," stated Dr Harsha Dhiman of Delhi University.

Prof. Guntupalli V.R. Prasad, the study's corresponding author, said the discovery sheds light on whether dinosaurs had reproductive systems comparable to turtles and lizards or their close relative crocodiles and birds.

Previously, it was thought that dinosaurs had a reproductive function comparable to that of turtles and other reptiles (unsegmented oviduct), as opposed to crocodiles and birds, who have a segmented reproductive system.

Crocodiles, like turtles and other reptiles, ovulate and release all of their eggs at the same time, as opposed to birds, which ovulate and deposit one egg at a time.

Background

The latest discovery demonstrates that central and western India are rich in dinosaur fossils that could reveal important details on dinosaur species diversity, nesting behaviour, and reproductive biology.
