Cluster bombs, electromagnetic pulse (EMP) warheads, and bunker-busting weapons can all be added to conventional warheads.

The SSC-7 and SSC-8 ground-launched cruise missiles (GLCMs) can also be fired by the missile system.

The Iskander-E system, which has a range of 280 km and a decreased payload of 489 kg, is the export variant. The Iskander-M system has only been employed by the Russian military.

Russia introduced the Iskander missile system in 2006. It was Russia's second effort to replace the Soviet Scud missile; the first being the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty-prohibited Oka SRB, or OTR-23.

In 2008, Russia fired the Iskander m missile for the first time in action in Georgia. (300 miles).

Why does Russia give Belarus an Iskander m missile system?

The G-7 summit is taking place in Germany at the same time that the Russian government announced it will transfer Iskander m missile systems to Belarus that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. In light of Russia's conflict in Ukraine, the declaration has once again brought up nuclear weapons. It is regarded as a kind of warning to the West as it increases its support for Ukraine by providing arms and ammunition.

In 2012, Russia claimed that the missile system may be used to attack the missile defences of Europe. In order to attack NATO forces in Poland, the Baltic States, and Sweden, the Iskander system has already been installed in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, expressed alarm about the "aggressive," "confrontational," and "repulsive" practices of its neighbours Lithuania and Poland during their most recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to reports, Lukashenko requested that Putin assist Belarus in mounting a "symmetrical response" to what he claimed were nuclear-armed flights by the NATO alliance led by the US close to Belarus' borders. Putin said that Belarus' Russian-built Su-25 jets might be upgraded in Russian factories to make them capable of delivering nuclear bombs, even though he stated that he did not see the need for a symmetrical response.

The Iskander missiles, which fly on a low trajectory and maneuver while in flight to hit targets with an accuracy of 2 to 5 meters, are intended to fool missile defense systems, said the US-based think tank CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies).

Significance

Belarus has played a significant role in Russia's conflict with Ukraine by acting as a staging area for the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. On June 25, Ukraine also asserted that Russian forces had launched many missiles from Belarus against the Ukrainian cities of Zhytomyr and Chernihiv.
