Rahul Narwekar: Who is he? Five lesser-known facts about the New Maharashtra Assembly Speaker

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, first-time MLA Rahul Narwekar beat Congress MLA Ashok Jagtap from the Colaba constituency in South Mumbai. Just hours prior to submitting his nomination for the MLA position from the constituency, Narwekar joined the BJP.

Narwekar was previously elected as a nominated member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in June 2016.

Prior to joining the Yuva Sena, the Shiv Sena's young branch led by Aditya Thackeray, he was a member of Shiv Sena.

He left the party to join the Nationalist Congress Party despite being denied a ticket for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He ran for the Lok Sabha in 2014 from the Maval constituency as an NCP candidate, however, he was defeated by Shrirang Appa of the Shiv Sena.

Suresh Narwekar, a former municipal councillor from the Colaba region, is the father of Rahul Narwekar. Additionally, he is married to top NCP figure Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, who serves as the speaker and chair of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Council at the moment.

Confidence vote on July 4th

In a two-day special session of the Assembly beginning today, July 3, the new Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government will now have to demonstrate its majority in a vote of confidence on the house floor on July 4, 2022.

On June 30, 2022, Eknath Shinde, a minister under the former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, was sworn in as the new chief minister of Maharashtra after organizing a coup against the leader of the Shiv Sena and choosing to form an alliance with the BJP, toppling the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration. Devendra Fadnavis, a former chief minister of Maharashtra and BJP leader, was sworn in as the deputy CM.

Just one day after Uddhav Thackeray resigned as chief minister of Maharashtra and asserted his claim to form the state's administration, Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis met with governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

While BJP MLA Rahul Narwekar was put forth by the Eknath Shinde-Fadnavis camp, Shiv Sena MLA Rajan Salvi was put up by the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition as a contender for the position of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker.

Following Nana Patole of the Congress' resignation from the position of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker in February 2021 to assume leadership of the party's state unit, the position had become vacant. Since there was no Speaker for the Maharashtra Assembly, Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal assumed the position.
