The Union Health Minister announced the One Nation, One Dialysis Program during his two-day trip to Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. In keeping with the idea of one nation and one service, the Central Government has been planning to introduce another service under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme under the National Health Mission called "One Nation, One Dialysis."

According to Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the One Nation, One Dialysis program will provide access to dialysis for patients in need wherever in the nation.

The Union Finance Minister announced the start of a National Dialysis Program at district hospitals as part of public-private collaboration in the Budget Speech for 2016–2017.

The initiative was introduced by the Indian government in consideration of the country's yearly increase of 2.2 lakh end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, which increases the need for 3.4 crores more dialysis treatments.

Every year, there are more and more patients with end-stage renal diseases, which increases the demand for 3.4 crore dialysis treatments.

The demand is not fully satisfied by the infrastructure at this time, despite India having approximately 4,950 dialysis centres, most of which are private.

Practically all families of patients who require dialysis suffer a financial catastrophe as a result of the high cost of care. A dialysis program is deemed necessary both in terms of providing significant life-saving procedures and in terms of lowering patient poverty due to out-of-pocket expenses.
