Present Indefinite Tense: There are three major kinds of verb tenses in English grammar. These are Present, Past and Future. The Present Tense talks about the event happening right now. The past tense describes an event that has just happened. On the other hand, the future tense tells about the occurrences that will be taking place in the coming future. What is Present Indefinite Tense?

Tense refers to the time frame of the action taking place and is described using the verb. Present Indefinite Tense or Present Tense can be defined as the action done in the present. However, there is no specific time limitation given to it being accomplished. Present indefinite tense can also be used to express true events, near future, habit, nature, etc. 

Example: 
  1. Rama loves chocolate 
  2. Sita goes to the market. 
Tense depicts the time frame of the action that takes place and is explained by using the verb. Simple Present Tense or Present Indefinite Tense can be explained as the action that takes place in the present. The present indefinite tense can also be employed to describe true occurrences near habit, future 
nature, etc.

Uses of Present Indefinite Tense

To depict a universal truth 
Example:
  1. The earth revolves around the sun.
  2. The sun rises in the east.
Activities of habitual nature and those with adverbs, such as never, always, rarely, and seldom. 
Examples: 
  1. She always speaks the truth.
  2. My office starts at 10 am.
  3. Roma never tells a lie.
For action taking place in the Present.
Examples:
  1. She plays Badminton. 
  2. I read the notes.
For events that are to take place in the near future.
Examples:
  1. My summer vacation will get over in the next week.
  2. My exams will commence next Monday.

How to Form Present Indefinite Tense?

Excluding the third person singular, most regular verbs use the raw form of the simple present tense, which ends with s. 

Rule: Subject + verb + Object 

Here are some more examples of Present Indefinite Tense that can help you understand the Tense more effectively. 
  1. They love to play football I know how to protest against injustice
  2. She prefers coffee to tea
  3. Do you love to listen to realistic songs?
  4. He goes to the library every day
  5. Do you like to watch cricket?
  6. I do not like to quarrel
  7. They always play cricket in that field
  8.  We come for shopping in this market
  9. I love to listen to melodious songs
  10. The poet writes romantic poems

How to Make Present Indefinite Tense Negative?

Do/does + not + [root form of verb] is the rule for making Present Indefinite Tense or Simple present tense verb negative. Rather than using do not or does not, you can employ the contraction doesn’t or don’t.

Rule: Subject + verb + not + Object 

Examples:
  1. Shakeel does not share his feelings with anyone.
  2. Mohan does not complete your homework. 
  3. I do not want to play right now.

To make the verb to be negative, the rule is (to be) + not.
Examples:
  1. I am not a coffee lover, but Shakeel for sure is.
  2. You aren’t ready for the football match today.

How to Make a Question using Present Indefinite Tense?

We use the words 'do' and 'does' when we ask questions in the Present Indefinite Tense or Simple present tense. For the third person singular (she, he, and it), we employ 'do'. With questions words, such as what, where, and when we use 'do' and 'does'. However, with question words 'who' we don’t use 'do' and 'does'.

Rule: Do/Does + Subject + Root verb

  1. Do you play cricket?
  2. Where do you live in Mumbai?
  3. Does he play Badminton?
  4. Where does he learn singing?
  5. When does Sita get up in the morning?
  6. Who takes care of your home in your absence?

  • Something that is correct right now.
  • Anything that takes place very often in the present.
  • A Statement that is always true.
Examples:
  1. I’m 25 years old.
  2. I’m a school student.

  5. The earth rises in the east and sets in the west.
