Highlights

Banyan is the national tree of India . Know complete detail about it here at Safalta.com.

The national tree is one of the proud symbols that is crucial to a country's identity. Ficus bengalensis, also known as the Banyan tree or Indian fig tree, is India's national tree. Its limbs spread out like blossoming trees, covering a large region. The tree is regarded as a sacred object in Hinduism. The roots then grow into additional trunks and branches. Because of these attributes and its perseverance, this tree is considered as immortal in many Indian mythology and folktales. Because it is connected with longevity and has great healing abilities, the tree is sometimes used as a metaphor for the fabled "Kalpa Vriksha" or "Tree of Wish Fulfillment." Even today, the banyan tree serves as the hub of the community and offers cover for village council meetings. The tree has the added privilege of becoming a national symbol because it is native to that nation. If you are preparing for competitive exams and looking for expert guidance, you can download our General Knowledge Free Ebook Download Now.

Importance of Banyan tree (National Tree of India)

  • The banyan tree is revered in Hinduism and is referred to as "Ashwath Vriksha" (Bhagavad Gita: "I am Banyan tree among trees"). Its seemingly ever-growing branches are a symbol of eternal life.
  • The name "kalpavriksha" for the banyan tree translates to "wish-fulfilling holy tree."
  • The banyan can be found in Indonesia's coat of arms. It is intended to represent Indonesia's unity as a single nation with numerous remote roots.
  • In his book Hothouse, Brian Aldiss imagines a future Earth in which a single giant banyan tree covers half of the planet after individual trees learn how to connect with one another and sprout new roots. The enormous banyans that grow up, around, and through the walls of Ta Prohm, one of the many temples in the Ankor Wat complex, are well-known.
  • The aerial prop roots of older banyan trees develop into thick, woody trunks that, as they age, can blend in with the main trunk and give the plants their distinctive shape.
  • Old trees can cover a large area by spreading out laterally utilising these prop roots.
  • The biggest of these trees can presently be found in Kolkata, India. In Lahaina's Courthouse Square in Hawaii, a single notable banyan tree was first planted in 1873 and has since grown to occupy two-thirds of an acre.
