Are Girls Allowed in NDA ?
At present only Male candidates are allowed to join the National Defence Academy (NDA) after their 12th examination for getting recruited into Indian Army, Air Force and Indian Navy. The selection is done through written examinatiom and SSB interview which is conducted by UPSC twice every year.
Women are not allowed to join the National Defence Academy till date and they can only apply seperately for the Army, Navy, and Airforce after graduation to get recruited . Allowing females to join NDA would be a great move and recently with the Supreme Court's notice to the Centre on exclusion of females from NDA it seems that rather soon women would be allowed to do the same .
Around March 7th while hearing a petition filed highlighting the exclusion of willing and eligible candidates from NDA , the Supreme Court issued a notice to the centre and others requesting them to respond to the petition filed by advocate Kush Kalra who contended that the exclusion amounted to violation of fundamental right to equality of women.
Further the petition added “The categorical exclusion of women to train at the NDA and get commissioned into the armed forces of the country as permanent commissioned officers solely on the basis of their sex is a denial of fundamental rights to practice any profession and it is not justifiable
within the contours of the Indian Constitution.”
The hearing was headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde . The plea also mentioned “the categorical exclusion of eligible female candidates from entering the NDA is not constitutionally justifiable and is simply done on the basis of their sex.”
The next hearing for the same in scheduled in April and it is believed that like the apex court's judgment in February last year which helped women officers gain a equal ground and compete on an equal level with their male counterparts for Permanent Commission (PC) the court will rule in favour of women joining NDA and thus shatter the long prevailing gender stereotype that women are physiologically weaker than men.
