What is a Growth habit?

In the field of horticulture, the term growth habits refers to the growth and development of a plant, the change in a plant's shape and height, and the kind of development it undergoes. There are genetic factors and environmental factors, which play a vital role in their growth habit.

For example, the interaction between various animals affects the adaption of plants to their environment. From an evolutionary point of view, growth habits have the function of assuring the survival and adaptation of plants in different habitats, eventually increasing the possibility of successfully passing on the genes to the coming generation.

Different types of plants based on Growth habits

If we assume different types of plants based on their height, some are too tall to climb, and some are too short. Besides height, the delicacy and stem thickness of plants also differ. For example, short plants have soft, greenish, and tender stems. On the other hand, tall and big plants have strong thick, and woody stems, which are hard to break down.

Based on the growth habits, different types of plants are as follows-

Herbs

Herbs are short plants with green, soft, and fragile stems without woody tissues. They have a life cycle of one to two seasons. Usually, they have few branches or are without branches. They can be easily uprooted from the soil. Herbs comprise enough nutritional perks, including minerals and vitamins, to make them a component of a well-balanced diet.

Some examples of Herbs are paddy, tomato, bananas, grass, and wheat.

Shrubs

Shrubs are plants, which are medium in size. They are woody plants and taller than Herbs. However, these plants are smaller than trees. Their height generally varies from 6m to 10m. Their basic characteristics involve woody stems, bushy and hard stems, and multiple branches. Stems are hard and flexible. However, these are not fragile. The life cycle of Shrubs generally depends on the species.

Some examples of Shrubs are Tulsi, jasmine, henna, and lemon.

Trees

Trees are big and tall kinds of plants. They have woody, thick, and hard stems. These are called trunks. This single stem helps many branches to raise that bear flowers, leaves, and fruits. Some trees are branchless such as coconut. They have only one main stem, which bears flower leaves, and fruits by itself. The life cycle of trees is very long.

Some examples of trees are neem, banyan, cashew mango teak, and oak. In addition to these different types of plants, two more kinds of plants need support to grow.

These are climbers and creepers.

Climbers

Climbers are much more developed plants than creepers. They have thick, weak, and long stems, which cannot stand straight. They use additional support to grow vertically and carry on their weight. These types of plants use special arrangements called tendrils, which they use to climb.

Some examples of climbers are Grapevine, Jasmine, green peas, pea plants, sweet gourd, runner beans, money plants, etc.

Creepers

Clippers are plants that crawl on the ground. They have long and fragile stems that can neither stand straight nor support their weight. Some examples of creepers are pumpkin, watermelon, sweet potato, and strawberry.
