The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a technique for measuring and tracking global, regional, and national hunger. The GHI score is determined by the values of four component indicators : Undernourishment , Child stunting , Child wasting. and Child mortality. The GHI score is calculated on a 100-point scale to indicate the degree of hunger, with zero indicating no hunger and 100 indicating severe hunger. The GHI is produced annually by the European NGOs Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.
Each set of GHI scores is based on data from a 5-year period. The GHI scores for 2022 are generated using data from 2017 to 2021.

Performance of Countries on Global Hunger Index 2022

Globally, progress against hunger has essentially stagnated in recent years, with a global score of 18.2 in 2022 compared to 19.1 in 2014. However, the GHI score in 2022 is still classified "moderate." Overlapping crises such as country conflicts, climate change, the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine war, which has increased global food, fuel, and fertiliser prices and is expected to "worsen hunger in 2023 and beyond," are plausible causes for the stagnation in this progress.
According to the index, 44 nations currently experience "severe" or "alarming" levels of hunger, and "without a substantial shift, neither the globe as a whole nor about 46 countries are anticipated to achieve even low hunger as defined by the GHI by 2030."

Top Performers on Global Hunger Index 2022

The top five countries in GHI 2022 are Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, China, and Croatia.

Worst Performers on Global Hunger Index 2022

The index's bottom five countries are Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, the Central African Republic, and Yemen.

India Ranked 107 on Global Hunger Index 2022

India (107) is ranked lower than Sri Lanka (64), Nepal (81), Bangladesh (84), and Pakistan among South Asian countries (99). India has a score of 29.1, placing it in the'serious' category. Afghanistan (109) is the only South Asian country that performs worse on the index than India.  China, along with 16 other countries, topped the ranking with a score of less than 5.

India's Position in the Four Indicators:

Child Wasting: At 19.3%, India's child wasting rate (low weight for height) is higher than in 2014 (15.1%) and even 2000 (17.15%). It is the highest for any country in the world and, due to India's massive population, drives up the region's average.
Undernourishment: Undernourishment has also increased in the country, rising from 14.6% in 2018-2020 to 16.3% in 2019-2021. It means that 224.3 million individuals in India (out of a total of 828 million worldwide) are considered undernourished.
The indicator quantifies the fraction of the population suffering from chronic dietary energy deficit.
Child Stunting and Mortality: India has made progress in terms of child stunting and mortality.
Between 2014 and 2022, child stunting (low height for age) decreased from 38.7% to 35.5%.
Child mortality (mortality rate for children under the age of five) has decreased from 4.6% to 3.3% in the same time period.

However, India saw an improvement in two parameters: child stunting, which fell from 38.7% in 2012-16 to 35.5 percent in 2017-21, and child mortality, which fell from 4.6% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2020. According to the GHI, stunting disparities between districts are especially pronounced in India. Researchers evaluated the factors that contributed to a drop in stunting in four Indian states between 2006 and 2016: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu," it stated.According to the report, researchers discovered that stunting decreased mostly as a result of increased coverage of health and nutrition interventions, household conditions (such as socioeconomic level and food security), and maternal factors (such as mothers' health and education).
