India's Position in the Four Indicators:
| Child Wasting: | At 19.3%, India's child wasting rate (low weight for height) is higher than in 2014 (15.1%) and even 2000 (17.15%). It is the highest for any country in the world and, due to India's massive population, drives up the region's average. |
| Undernourishment: | Undernourishment has also increased in the country, rising from 14.6% in 2018-2020 to 16.3% in 2019-2021. It means that 224.3 million individuals in India (out of a total of 828 million worldwide) are considered undernourished. The indicator quantifies the fraction of the population suffering from chronic dietary energy deficit. |
| Child Stunting and Mortality: | India has made progress in terms of child stunting and mortality. Between 2014 and 2022, child stunting (low height for age) decreased from 38.7% to 35.5%. Child mortality (mortality rate for children under the age of five) has decreased from 4.6% to 3.3% in the same time period. |
However, India saw an improvement in two parameters: child stunting, which fell from 38.7% in 2012-16 to 35.5 percent in 2017-21, and child mortality, which fell from 4.6% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2020. According to the GHI, stunting disparities between districts are especially pronounced in India. Researchers evaluated the factors that contributed to a drop in stunting in four Indian states between 2006 and 2016: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu," it stated.According to the report, researchers discovered that stunting decreased mostly as a result of increased coverage of health and nutrition interventions, household conditions (such as socioeconomic level and food security), and maternal factors (such as mothers' health and education).
