Types of Motion: Let us assume that you are sitting on a chair watching television and thinking about whether you are at rest or in motion. You are in a stationary position. However, let us re-examine the situation. We all live on earth, right? and it is continuously moving. So, are we at rest or in motion? Looking for an answer to such puzzling questions can be perplexing.

What is Motion?

The free movement of a body associated with time is known as motion; for example, the dust falling from the doormat, the fan, the water flowing from a tap, a moving car, a rolling ball, etc. Even the universe is in continuous motion. Are all these types of motion similar? Is the motion of a pendulum similar to that of a rolling ball or a moving car or train? Multiple types of motion are taking place around us, and they can be generally categorized based on the following parameters-
  • Speed
  • Time
  • Path
  • Distance

Types of Motion

There are majorly 4 types of motion as per physics and mechanism. These types of motion are as follows-

Oscillatory Motion
A continuous motion in which an object repeats the movement constantly in the same motion, such as a swing.

Rotary Motion
This is a special type of motion in which the object is in rotation around a set axis, such as a figure skater revolving on an ice rink.

Linear Motion
It is a one-dimensional motion on a straight line, such as an athlete running on a linear path.

Reciprocating Motion
it is a recurring and constant up-and-down or back-and-forth motion, such as a needle in a sewing machine.
There are also different other kinds of Motion as per the directives or as per the state of Motion.

Types of Motion as per state-
  1. Uniform Motion
  2. Non-Uniform Motion

Types of Motion as per direction-
  1. One Dimensional Motion
  2. Two Dimensional Motion
  3. Three Dimensional Motion

Types of Motion as per direction (Other types of Motion)
  1. Translational Motion
  2. Periodic Motion
  3. Circular Motion

Other types of Motion

There are 7 major types of Motion as per Physics

Oscillatory Motion

Oscillatory Motion is the type of Motion that an object performs by repeating a similar movement repeatedly. Oscillatory Motion would keep on moving forever when there is no friction. However, in our real world, the motion consequently stops and comes to equilibrium.

Some of the most suitable examples of Oscillatory Motion are as follows-
  • The movement of a pendulum
  • A swinging swing
  • The turning fork
  • A boat tossing up and down a river

Rotational Motion

Rotational Motion can be referred to as the motion when an object moves along its axis and all the parts of it move for a diverse distance in a given period. Therefore, if an object is under Rotational Motion, all of its facets will move in diverse distances in similar gaps of time, for instance, blades of a windmill, merry-go-round, blades of a fan, etc.

Transitional Motion

This type of Motion is when all the sections of an object move in the same distance in a given period referred to as transitional motion. For instance, a man running on the road, a cycle moving on a path, or birds flying in the sky.

There are two types of Transitional Motion are-
  1. Curvilinear Motion
  2. Rectilinear Motion

Periodic Motion

A motion that is performed repeatedly after an equal period is referred to as periodic motion. Usually, the Periodic Motion is in the back-and-forth motion.

Below are some examples of Periodic Motion -
  • Hands of a working clock
  • A moving pendulum
  • The earth rotates in its orbit

Circular Motion

When a body constantly moves in a circular path, it is called circular motion. The speed of the object should be constant in this type of motion. Some instances of circular Motion are as follows-
  • A car or a bicycle moving on a circular track or park
  • Movement of the earth in its orbit
  • The Motion of the moon around the earth

Linear Motion

Linear Motion is when a body moves in a straight line without any difference. Significant examples of Linear Motion are as follows-
  • A bullet shot from a pistol
  • An athlete running on a straight path

Uniform Motion

Uniform Motion is said when an object covers an equal distance in equal time intervals. In these cases, it would be a straight path if we represent the motion on the graph.

Some examples of Uniform Motion are as follows-
  • A flying airplane at a definite height at a constant speed
  • Bicycle moving on a straight road at a constant speed

Non-Uniform Motion

When an object covers unequal distances in a definite and given time interval, it is said to be in non-uniform motion. If you represent the path of the object, in this case on a graph, it will be a curved line.

Some instances of Non-uniform Motion are as follows-
  • A freely falling object
  • A train running at different limits speed
  • A man walking in a park
  • A man walking on the road
