On October 31st, 2018, India revealed the world's tallest statue, which cost 29.9 billion rupees (£330 million; $430 million) to erect. The 182m (600ft) high structure is a bronze-clad tribute to independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the western state of Gujarat. The "Statue of Unity," according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be a significant tourism draw. What went into making the world's tallest statue?

The project was initially announced in 2010, and the building of the monument began in October 2013. It took 57 months to complete, and it was unveiled by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018, the 143rd anniversary of Patel's birth.

The structure's overall height is 240 m (790 ft), with a base of 58 m (190 ft) and a statue of 182 m.

  • The Statue of Unity weighs around 67,000 tonnes and was designed to survive significant earthquakes as well as strong winds.
  • Approximately 12,000 bronze panels weighing over 1,850 tonnes were utilized on the exterior.
  • The monument and its environs cover more than 20,000 square meters and are surrounded by a 12-square-kilometre artificial lake.
  • More than 2,000 employees, including several hundred Chinese labourers, participated to the project.

5 Zones of Statue of Unity

The monument is separated into five zones, only three of which are open to the public:

The first zone, which has three floors and includes an exhibition space, mezzanine, and roof, extends from its base to the level of Patel's shins. A memorial garden and a museum may be found in Zone 1. The second zone stretches up to Patel's thighs, while the third zone spans 153 metres up to the viewing gallery. The fourth zone is for upkeep, and the last zone is for the statue's head and shoulders.

The Viewing Gallery

The viewing gallery will be accessed by two elevators positioned in the centre of the monument, each having a carrying capacity of 40 persons. The gallery, which can hold up to 200 people at a time, will feature a view of the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges, which also serve as the border between Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Visitors may also see the Sardar Sarovar Reservoir and the 12-kilometre-long Garudeshwar Reservoir from a distance; the latter will assist guarantee that there is always water around the monument, which is located downstream from the Narmada dam.

The 'Loha' and Earth campaigns

On December 15, 2013, then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi launched a program to collect soil and scrap iron farm equipment in 1,69,000 villages, carrying almost three lakh empty kit boxes. As a result, by 2016, 135 metric tonnes of iron in various forms had been gathered and used in the creation of the monument. The soil gathered from all throughout the nation was used to build the symbolic Unity Wall, and the Suraj Petitions received from this campaign are shown in the exhibition hall in digital, graphical form. 

Statue of Unity achieves another milestone

The 'Statue of Unity' in Kevadia, Gujarat's Narmada district, has attracted more than 50 lakh visitors since its unveiling in 2018. According to Gujarat's Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Environment) Rajiv Gupta, the monument has evolved as a worldwide tourism destination with many attractions for people of all ages. Visitors from all around the country and overseas have flocked to the tourist attraction and numerous more attractions have been added since then. The government has introduced eight additional trains from various regions of the country, as well as a seaplane service from Ahmedabad, to strengthen rail and air access to Kevadia.

The number of visitors to the tourist attraction was reduced following the breakout of COVID-19 in 2020 but has increased dramatically when it returned to the public on October 17 last year after being shut for more than seven months.
