The project was initially announced in 2010, and the building of the monument began in October 2013.
It took 57 months to complete, and it was unveiled by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018, the 143rd anniversary of Patel's birth.

- The Statue of Unity weighs around 67,000 tonnes and was designed to survive significant earthquakes as well as strong winds.

The monument is separated into five zones, only three of which are open to the public:
The first zone, which has three floors and includes an exhibition space, mezzanine, and roof, extends from its base to the level of Patel's shins.
A memorial garden and a museum may be found in Zone 1.
The second zone stretches up to Patel's thighs, while the third zone spans 153 metres up to the viewing gallery.
The fourth zone is for upkeep, and the last zone is for the statue's head and shoulders.
The viewing gallery will be accessed by two elevators positioned in the centre of the monument, each having a carrying capacity of 40 persons.
The gallery, which can hold up to 200 people at a time, will feature a view of the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges, which also serve as the border between Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Visitors may also see the Sardar Sarovar Reservoir and the 12-kilometre-long Garudeshwar Reservoir from a distance; the latter will assist guarantee that there is always water around the monument, which is located downstream from the Narmada dam.

On December 15, 2013, then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi launched a program to collect soil and scrap iron farm equipment in 1,69,000 villages, carrying almost three lakh empty kit boxes.

The government has introduced eight additional trains from various regions of the country, as well as a seaplane service from Ahmedabad, to strengthen rail and air access to Kevadia.
The number of visitors to the tourist attraction was reduced following the breakout of COVID-19 in 2020 but has increased dramatically when it returned to the public on October 17 last year after being shut for more than seven months.
