IAS Full Form: IAS stands for Indian Administrative Services, which is a prestigious civil service in India. Candidates are selected for this esteemed position through the Civil Service Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Only the candidates who achieve top ranks in this examination are eligible for selection into the IAS. As public servants, IAS officers shoulder significant responsibilities. IAS Full Form

As already mentioned, IAS's full form is Indian Administrative Services. It is not easy to become an IAS officer. You have to qualify for the Civil Services Exam which has a tiny success rate. Indian Civil Service Examination began to be held in India from 1922 onwards. Currently, the UPSC conducts this exam on an annual basis in three stages- prelims, mains, and interviews.

What is IAS? 

There are three All India Services in the country and IAS is one of them. There are various posts under the IAS. Some of them are as follows:

1. SDM, Joint Collector, Chief Development Officer (CDO)

2. District Magistrate, District Collector or Commissioner

3. Divisional Commissioner

Along with power, there are major responsibilities that an IAS officer has to shoulder. Some of the responsibilities and duties of IAS officers are as given below:
 

  • Maintaining Law and order and general administration to improve the nation's day-to-day affair
  • Managing Public Sector Undertakings(PSUs)
  • Handling the day-to-day affairs of the Government
  • Policy formulation and policy implementation
  • Overseeing public fund management
 

How to become an IAS? 

To become an IAS officer you have to appear for the Civil Services Exam, the eligibility requirement is that candidates should be above 21 years of age and should have completed graduation. Other than this, there are also chances of promotion from state civil services into the IAS.

The eligibility criteria to become an IAS is as given below:
  1. Age Limit: – 21-32 years with age relaxation for reserved categories
  2. Qualification: – Graduation degree from a recognized university
  3. Maximum Number of Attempts: – 6
  4. Nationality: – Citizen of India or Subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or Tibetan refugee and Indian Origin Migrants from select countries.

IAS Syllabus and Exam Pattern

There are three stages in UPSC IAS Exam- Prelims, Mains and Interview/Personality Test. 
The pattern of prelims exam is as given below:
