List of Governor Generals of India: India had various Governors-General during the British Period. After the passing of the Regulating Act of 1773, the position of Governor General was created. Warren Hastings served as Bengal's first governor-general from 1772 to 1785. The Bengal Supreme Council was headed by an English politician by the name of Warren Hastings.

He implemented the Regulating Act of 1773, which put an end to the Dual Government system. The Calcutta Madrasa for the advancement of Islamic studies was founded by him and William Jones in 1781, and the Asiatic Society of Bengal was founded in 1784. In 1801, Hastings was selected as a Member of the Royal Society. By the Charter Act of 1833, the Governor-General of Bengal was designated Governor-General of British India. William Bentick served as British India's first governor-general.

List of Governors-General of Bengal

Warren Hastings served as Bengal's first governor-general from 1772 to 1785. English statesman Warren Hastings was the head of the Supreme Council of Bengal. Through the implementation of the Regulating Act of 1773, he ended the Dual Government system. Together with William Jones, he established the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1781 and the Calcutta Madrasa for the advancement of Islamic studies in 1784.

The Governor-General of Bengal became the Governor-General of British India under the Charter Act of 1833. Additionally, William Bentick served as British India's first governor-general.

CR Gopalachari was the only Indian to serve as India's governor-general. In 1950, India became a republic. He served as India's last governor-general before the post was abolished.
